Sam Played in The Masters?
April 9th 2011 - Did you know that Sam played in The Masters in 1962? He was one of 12 amateurs who qualified to play that year. Sam earned his spot by making it to the Quarterfinals of the 1961 U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach. He lost that match 2&1 to the eventual winner, Jack Nicklaus.

Sam's experience at The Masters was a highlight of his playing career. He traveled to Augusta with his parents, Don and Agnes Carmichael, along with lots of supporters from Martinsville.

The amateurs were all housed at The Crow's Nest located in the Club House at Augusta. Sam said he remembers waking up on Thusday morning and looking out his window. "It was an absolute sea of people. I had never seen so many people in my life!"

Unfortunately, Sam didn't make the cut. He shot 76-75=151 and missed it by 2 strokes. Arnold Palmer went on to win the tournament beating Gary Player and Dow Finsterwald in a playoff.

Who does Sam like in this year's Masters? "I think Rory McIlroy has a great chance to win. He has a wonderful golf swing and gained a lot of experience last year in the majors."

In addition to playing in The Masters, Sam played in several US Opens and PGA Championships. Check back this summer for more about Sam's experiences playing in the majors.
